Marian softball completes perfect homestand with sweep of WLC

April 22, 2019

Marian University softball (19-11, 11-5 NACC) pushed their win streak to six games with a 4-3 win in eight innings before a 12-3 five-inning victory.

The opener was tight and saw Wisconsin Lutheran take a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth.  Sophomore Peyton Loesch was able to come up with a clutch hit in that bottom of the fifth sending a long ball over the fence, her third of the season, to put Marian ahead 3-2.

This score held until the seventh where Wisconsin Lutheran was able to tie the game with two outs off of an error to send the game to extras.  After a scoreless top of the eighth, sophomore Katy Croeker would lay down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown into right field that allowed junior Taylor Lauscher to score and give Marian their second straight walk-off victory.

Three of the top four Marian hitters had multiple hits in junior Ally Fox, senior Lindsey Strainis, and Loesch.  In the circle, junior Paige Rauhut (9-5) went the distance allowing just one earned run over 8.0 innings of work with four punch outs.

Wisconsin Lutheran was able to open game two with three runs only to have the Sabres answer with an eight spot.  An error played a key role in the inning as seven of the eight Marian runs were unearned.  Loesch along with freshmen Hannah Cozzi and Andrea Meagher each drove in runs, while Strainis drew a bases-loaded walk.  Lauscher was able to close out the big inning with a  two-RBI single to put Marian ahead 8-3.

The Sabres were able to add three runs in the second with Cozzi bringing in a run and Fox driving in a pair of runs.  Sophomore Alexa Rodriguez was able to close out the scoring for the game in the third inning with an RBI single to put the final at 12-3.

Sophomore Myranda Schuttenhelm (8-4) was able to go the distance to earn the win bouncing back after a tough first inning to shut out the Warriors only allowing a total of five hits.  The offense was paced by Fox and Lauscher who each had three-hit games with two runs driven in, while Marian had another three multi-hit games in the win.

Marian hits the road traveling to Edgewood Monday, April 22 for a noon doubleheader in NACC action.
