Marian University women’s lacrosse (0-6, 0-0 NACC) played in their closest game of the season falling to Augustana (Ill.) 12-7 in their home opener.
The Vikings were able to score the first five goals of the game before sophomore Nicole Stachon opened the scoring for Marian. Augustana would then score three unanswered goals to take an 8-1 lead. Freshman Emma Heide scored with 3:23 left before half and fellow freshman Izzy Newton beat the buzzer to put Marian down 8-3 going into half.
Newton and sophomore Kayla Kolpitcke were each able to score in the third quarter as the Vikings expanded their lead to 11-5 going into the final 15 minutes. After a Viking goal to open the quarter, sophomore Dallas Kreisa scored and Newton netted her third goal as the Sabres outscored their opponent in the final stanza.
Heide had a strong game for the Sabres causing three turnovers and grabbing three draw controls. Kreisa led the team with four ground balls. Freshman Gwen Kosirog (0-5) made nine saves in goal for the Sabres.
Marian travels to Cornell for a 1 p.m. non-conference game Sunday, March 27.
