Safeguards for Human Participants in Research
The Marian University Institutional Review Board (IRB) is dedicated to safeguarding human participants in research. By evaluating research protocols, the IRB ensures that risks are minimized and the potential benefits of participation are maximized. Our IRB is registered with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with Federal-wide Assurance Number FWA00014929, and approved through December 17, 2027.
CITI Training
To participate in research, all Marian faculty, staff, and students must complete CITI training, which covers the ethical treatment of human subjects. This certification ensures researchers are well-prepared to uphold ethical standards in their work.
To register for the CITI training, students can use any email address, provided Marian University is selected as the institutional affiliation. The program consists of 17 required modules, and students must score at least 80% on all quizzes to successfully complete the certification. This ensures you gain the knowledge needed to ethically engage in research involving human participants. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully to complete the training and advance your academic and professional research journey.

Level of Review
The Federal Government has developed a decision tool to assist researchers with determining the level of review for research projects. This Decision Chart from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides guidance on the appropriate level of review (Exempt, Expedited, Full Review) and specific category of review based on the type of research and subject population. Final determination regarding level of review is made by the Marian University IRB.
Timeline for Full Board Review
Only protocols requiring full board review (typically protocols with high potential risk) must be submitted in accord with posted deadlines. Protocols which qualify for review as expedited or exempt from further IRB oversight may be submitted at any time.
If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, proposals must be received in the Institutional Review Board by email by 4:30 p.m. the next business day.
