Marian University women’s hockey (0-1-0) fell to UW-Stevens Point 3-1 in its season opener.
- The game started fairly evenly only for UWSP to score 12:40 into the first stanza.
- The remainder of the period saw the Pointers gain control but Marian was able to limit the damage to just 1-0.
- The Pointers were able to take a 2-0 lead 11:32 into the second period.
- Marian was able to find a groove the rest of the period.
- The Sabres were finally able to capitalize with 1:38 left in the period when junior Michaela Powers scored her first goal as a Sabre with an assist to fellow junior Sydney Schipper.
- A defensive third battle broke out but the Pointers were able to ice the game with a goal at the 11:50 mark.
- The Pointers finished with a slim 26-23 advantage in shots where the Sabres outshot UWSP 11-6 in the final period.
- Neither team had a power-play goal with Marian having six chances and UWSP four.
- The Sabres had 28 faceoff wins to only 17 for the Pointers.
- UWSP extends its winning streak against Marian to seven games.
- Marian hasn’t won its season opener since the 2015-16 season.
