MONTGOMERY, Ill. – Marian University softball (6-11, 1-5 NACC) was defeated by Aurora 10-1 in five innings and 4-3 in a NACC doubleheader.

Marian served as the home team for both games as the doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Smith Field.

The Spartans jumped all over the Sabres scoring nine runs between the first two innings.  Senior Melanie Weigel was able to drive in sophomore Katelyn Matenaer in the first inning for what proved to be the only Marian run.  Three different Marian hitters recorded a hit in the defeat.

Marian was able to keep pace with the Spartans in game two and had a late rally fall just short in a one-run defeat.  Aurora scored one run in the first before a home run from Matenaer, her second of the season, tied the game in the third.  The Spartans then used a big sixth inning scoring three runs to take a 4-1 advantage.

The Sabres were able to put together a two-out rally in the seventh when Julia Corona hit a two-run homer, her first of the season, to put Marian down just one.

Junior Emalee Depa (4-5) had a strong outing in the circle going 5.2 innings allowing just six hits and four earned runs.

Marian travels to MSOE Wednesday, April 13 for a 2 p.m. NACC twin bill.
