RHINELANDER, Wis. – Marian University softball (0-2, 0-0 NACC) was swept by UW-Stevens Point in their first games of the season.

A slow start proved to be the difference in game one of the twin bill as UW-Stevens Point scored all of their runs in the first two innings of a 4-2 game.  After the Pointers scored one in the first, sophomore Katelyn Matenaer drove in a run to tie the game in the next half inning.  UWSP responded with three in the bottom of the second, however, to take the lead for good.  A home run from senior Melanie Weigel in the sixth cut into the deficit but Marian couldn’t complete the comeback.

Junior Emalee Depa (0-1) went the distance allowing nine hits to earn the loss in the circle for the Sabres.

The offense for the Sabres would be silenced in game two with Weigel managing the only Marian hit of a 6-0 loss.  The Pointers would score three runs in the fifth and three in the seventh to earn the sweep.

Senior Cailie Pliner (0-1) allowed three runs over 4.0 innings of work, while freshman Kaitlyn Van De Hey threw 2.1 innings in her first appearance as a Sabre.  Sophomore Taylor Towry recorded the final two outs without allowing a base runner.

Marian takes on Northland and Muskingum in the first games of the spring trip Sunday, March 6.
