DE PERE, Wis. – Marian University NCAA men’s hockey (11-13-2, 5-6-5-2 NCHA) was defeated by No. 13 St. Norbert 5-2 to open the NCHA Harris Cup Quarterfinals.

  • The Green Knights were able to get out to a fast start scoring two goals in the first period and the first two goals of the second period.
  • Senior Jack Sampson scored his ninth goal of the season, a short-handed score, with just 2:36 left in the second period to put Marian behind 4-1 after 40 minutes.
  • The Green Knights were able to build their cushion back out to four goals to open the third period.
  • Sampson then netted a power-play goal with 20 seconds left in the game to help build momentum for game two.
  • Sophomore Jaymes Knee and freshman Noah Pickart each assisted the second Sampson goal.
  • Marian was outshot 40-28 for the game with the Sabres outshooting the Green Knights in the second period 12-10.
  • St. Norbert outshot Marian 16-5 in the final period of play.
  • The Marian penalty kill kept the Green Knights off the board on six chances, including a major penalty, while the Sabre power play was successful once on three chances.
  • The Sabres will need to win game two of the series in regulation to force a one-period mini-game.
