ATLANTA – Marian University men’s lacrosse (0-4, 0-0 NACC) led at halftime but fell to Oglethorpe 15-11.
The Sabres were able to get an early jump on the Petrels scoring three of the first four goals of the game. Oglethorpe responded scoring three unanswered goals to go up 4-3 with 3:33 left in the quarter. A pair of goals from senior Nick Klotz in the final 1:44 put Marian ahead 5-4 after 15 minutes. The Petrels opened the second quarter with two goals to retake the lead but Marian responded scoring three of the final four goals of the quarter. Freshman Serge Simard would score at the buzzer to put the Sabres ahead 8-7 going into the half.
Marian started the second half strong with senior Garrett Houlihan scoring a pair of goals as Marian led 10-7. Oglethorpe would respond once again, however, scoring five unanswered goals to go up 12-10 heading into the final stanza. The Petrels wouldn’t let Marian back into the game scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter to build a five-goal lead. A Houlihan goal with 25 seconds left in the game then set the final at 15-11.
Klotz and Houlihan each scored five goals with an assist to lead the offense. Freshman Ben Martin led the offense with six ground balls, while senior Erik Horman (0-2) made 12 saves on 27 shots.
Marian returns to the Midwest taking on Lake Forest Saturday, March 12 for a 2 p.m. face-off.
