Marian University women’s soccer (9-8-1, 8-5-0 NACC) defeated Edgewood 3-2 to close out the regular season on a five-match winning streak.

Marian wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as junior Ashley Welk was able to score just 5:28 into the match with an assist from sophomore Trinity Grimes for her 10th goal of the year.  This proved to be the lone tally for the opening stanza as the Sabres outshoot Edgewood 14-6.

Welk added to the Sabre lead with an unassisted goal from the top of the box for her 11th goal of the year just 5:26 into the second half.  The Eagles were able to get on the board in the 60th minute to cut into the Marian deficit.  Senior Meghan Batzner extended the lead for the Sabres then with her fifth goal of the season when she buried a breakaway at the 64:01 mark.  Edgewood was able to once again find an equalizer but the Sabre defense held off a late Eagle push to secure the win.

Marian finished with a 25-11 edge for shots with Welk accounting for six of the Sabre shots.  Senior Kylie Lange (6-3-0) was able to earn the victory in goal making three saves.

This is the first five-match winning streak for the Sabre women’s soccer program since 2017 when Marian also closed out the regular season with five straight wins.

Marian opens the NACC Tournament on the road Sunday, Oct. 31 with their opponent and time to be determined based on results of matches played tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 28.
