Marian University women’s lacrosse (1-10, 1-2 NACC) defeated Illinois Tech 10-9 for their first win of the season.
Scoring was at a premium in the first quarter as Marian took a slim 2-1 lead with goals from sophomore Nicole Stachon and freshman Izzy Newton with just three seconds left. IIT tied the game at 2-2 to open the second quarter before Marian outscored the Scarlet Hawks 5-1 the remainder of the half. Newton would score three of the Marian goals as the Sabres led 7-3 at the break.
Marian built their lead out to six with a pair of goals from Stachon to open the third quarter. The Scarlet Hawks were able to cut into the deficit, however, scoring with just 27 seconds left to take a 9-4 lead going into the fourth. Stachon was able to find the back of the net to put Marian ahead 10-4 before IIT began to rally. The Scarlet Hawks would score five unanswered and trail by just one with 1:20 left. Marian would win the next draw and hold on for a 10-9 win.
Stachon and Newton each had six points scoring four times with a pair of assists. The duo also led the team with four ground balls. Freshman Emma Heide also had a strong game grabbing six ground balls with five caused turnovers.
Marian closes out the home portion of their season Tuesday, April 19 taking on Edgewood at 4 p.m.
