HANCOCK, Mich. – Marian University women’s ice hockey (7-14-1, 3-9-0-1 NCHA) defeated Finlandia 5-1 to open a road NCHA series.
- Marian was able to get out to a quick start scoring just 3:57 into the game with junior Brynn Weaver scoring from sophomores Allie Kieffer and Dayna Jones.
- Sophomore Hailie Hefel then gave Marian a 2-0 advantage with 3:50 left in the opening period with assists from senior Melodee Eastman and Weaver.
- After a scoreless second period, Weaver scored just 1:02 into the third period with an assist from senior Alyssa Heim.
- Weaver then closed out a hat trick with a power-play goal to put Marian ahead 4-0. Jones and Kieffer once again were credited with assists.
- Finlandia would end the shutout at the 12:35 mark.
- Senior Kristen Bisschop closed out the scoring with just 10 seconds remaining in the game, assists to Jones and fellow senior Brooke Anderson.
- Marian outshot Finlandia 63-11 for the game and only allowed one shot in the second period.
- The Marian power play scored once on three chances, while the Sabre penalty kill held the Lions scoreless on one chance.
- The Sabres won 35 faceoffs and only lost 18 of the draws.
- Marian was able to clinch a spot in the NCHA Slaats Cup with the victory.
