LISLE, Ill. – Marian University softball (6-7, 1-3 NACC) earned their first NACC victory of the season splitting with Benedictine.

Marian was the home team for both games as the twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at Smith Field.

The Sabre were able to jump out early on Benedictine in the first inning of game one when senior Melanie Weigel drove in a pair of runs.  The Eagles cut the deficit in half in the third inning but Marian had a response in the next half inning.  Weigel would double to bring in a run before sophomore Taylor Towry drove in Weigel to put Marian ahead 4-1.

Benedictine would manage to score one in the sixth and one in the seventh but the Sabres were able to hold on for a 4-3 win.  Junior Andrea Miller would throw out the tying run at home from right field for the second out of the inning before senior Cailie Pliner struck out the final batter looking to earn the save.

Junior Emalee Depa (4-3) earned the victory going 5.2 innings allowing one earned run off of five hits.  Weigel finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three driven in, while freshman Kerena Wood scored a pair of runs.

Marian would record eight hits in game two but struggled to plate runs as Benedictine salvaged a split with an 8-1 win.  The Eagles plated four runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.  Weigel would drive in the only Marian run in the sixth with a single before Benedictine scored twice in the seventh.

Marian is scheduled to play at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday, April 6 for a 3 p.m. non-conference twin bill.
