Marian University men’s volleyball (3-0, 0-0 NACC) closed out its opening weekend with a pair of sweeps over Calvin and North Park.

MARIAN VS. CALVIN / 25-19, 25-17, 25-15.

  • The Sabres were able to jump out to an early lead in set one behind an 8-5 run.
  • Calvin brought the score to a tie at 11-11 behind a 7-3 run before the Marian offense got hot and took the 19-15 advantage.
  • Marian was able to close out set one with a 6-4 run.
  • Set two was much of the same as the Sabres got out to a hot start behind a 9-3 run and continued to strong play by extending the lead to 15-5.
  • The Sabres strong early play would prove to be too much for Calvin to overcome even with the Knights holding the slight 12-10 advantage to close out set two.
  • Set three saw the Sabres get out to a quick 3-0 lead before Calvin would take the lead with a 4-2 run of its own.
  • Marian would go on a strong 7-3 run to extend its lead to five at 12-7.
  • The Sabres did not let Calvin gain any traction throughout the third set and would continue its strong play behind a 13-8 run to close out the match.

MARIAN VS. NORTH PARK / 25-19, 25-16, 25-18

  • North Park jumped out to quick 7-3 lead before Marian went on a run of its own to bring the score even 10-10.
  • A strong 6-2 run would push the Sabre lead to 16-12 and sustain the lead the remainder of set one.
  • Marian sustained strong play but with a little push back from North Park before closing out the game on a slim 9-8 advantage.
  • Set two saw back-and-fourth play as the teams would have multiple ties before the Sabres used a 4-0 run at 6-6 to extend its lead 10-6.
  • A 8-5 run would extend the Marian lead to seven at 18-11 before the Sabres would easily close out set two with a 7-6 advantage.
  • Marian would start set three on a 4-1 before North Park matched the Sabre run to tie things at 5-5.
  • The two teams would trade points with an even score at 10-10 before a 8-2 run gave the Sabres a lead that proved to be insurmountable.
  • North Park would close out set three with the slight 8-7 advantage but the Sabre lead was enough cushion.

MARIAN VS. CALVIN

  • Marian dominated the match in all statistical categories aside from aces where Calvin held the 6-3 advantage.
  • The Sabre offense was extremely efficient behind a .371 hitting percentage while holding Calvin to .015 hitting.
  • The two teams both recorded two blocks but the Sabre back row held the 26-19 advantage in digs.
  • Marian now has the 1-0 all-time series lead as this was the inaugural matchup between the two squads.

MARIAN VS. NORTH PARK

  • The Sabres offense was efficient once again and would record double digit kills in all three sets.
  • Marian has now held its opponent to under .100 hitting in two of its three matches to open the season.
  • The Marian offense held the advantage in kills 41-21 while also having the dominant advantage in assists 40-20.
