DUBUQUE, Iowa – Marian University baseball (4-4, 0-0 NACC) took control early defeating Dubuque 8-3.
After sophomore Logan Rademan doubled to open the game and stole third base he was able to score off of an error to open the scoring. Freshman James Bornick then hit his first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the second, to give Marian a 2-0 advantage. Marian managed to score in three straight innings when junior Riley Palmquist brought in a pair of runs with a double.
Dubuque was able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third only to have senior Josh Gates hit a sacrifice fly in the next half inning to put Marian ahead 5-1 after four innings. Another long ball, this time off of the bat of senior Jonah Landowski put Marian ahead 7-1. The Spartans scored once more in the seventh only to have a bunt single from senior Nick Sterman put Marian ahead 8-2. Dubuque ended the scoring for the game with a run in the bottom of the eighth to put the final at 8-3.
Four different Sabres had a multi-hit game led by senior Sean Meyer who went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Senior Taylor Middaugh (2-1) was lights out on the mound going 7.0 innings allowing just three runs with just as many strikeouts. Sophomore Andrew Schroeder tossed the final 2.0 innings allowing just one hit.
Due to weather in the morning, the two squads were only able to play one game after originally being scheduled for a doubleheader. The two squads close out the series with a noon twin bill tomorrow, Sunday, March 20.
