MEQUON, Wis. – Marian University women’s hockey (0-6-0, 0-4-0 NCHA) forced overtime with a goal in the final minute of regulation, but a power play goal from the Falcons in the extra period gave CUW a 3-2 win.
Senior Paige Johnson netted the equalizer that came with just 17-seconds remaining in regulation for her first goal of the year. Sophomore Ally Fox assisted the goal as the first Sabre goal, which opened the scoring for the game. Junior Jill Schneider scored the game’s first goal at the 4:57 mark, her second of the season, with assists to Fox and junior Hailey Miller.
The lead wouldn’t last long as a little under four minutes later the Falcons would net their first goal of the game to send the teams tied into the first intermission. CUW then took their first lead of the game at the 8:15 mark of the second period before netting the overtime game-winner with 1:42 left in the extra period.
The Sabres put together a big second period in the loss outshooting the Falcons 16-5. Marian would finish the game with a 37-29 margin in shots led by freshman Megan Cook who had a team-high five shots.
Junior Lindsey Strainis (0-6-0) finished with 26 saves in the defeat with a perfect third period where she made 12 stops.
The Marian power play would have a rough day only managing one goal on nine opportunities.
