MILWAUKEE – Marian University men’s basketball (1-5, 1-1 NACC) earned their first victory of the season defeating MSOE 78-72.
The Raiders were able to take a 15-9 lead to open the first 10 minutes of the game before the Sabres put together a strong stretch. Marian was able to go on a 13-4 run over a stretch of 4:37 to take a 22-19 lead with 5:28 left in the half. The Raiders responded retaking the lead at 29-28 with 3:05 left in the half before the Sabres closed out the opening stanza with an 8-4 stretch to take a 36-33 lead into the half.
After MSOE scored the first four points of the second half to retake the lead, the Sabres went on another good stretch with a 10-4 run to give MU a 46-41 advantage with 15:59 left to play. The Raiders managed to tie the game at 49-49 before Marian was able to pull away for good. Behind a stretch where Marian went 5-7 from the field, the Sabres built out the largest lead of the game at 61-51 with 7:05 left to play behind a 12-2 run.
The Sabres saw their lead dwindle down to as little as four, but the Sabres were able to make sure MSOE would not get any closer. The Sabres were able to ice the game in the final minute after going 5-6 from the charity stripe.
The Sabre bench played a key role in the win outscoring the MSOE bench by a 27-6 margin. The Sabres had four double-digit scorers led by juniors Logan Hamilton and DeAndre Ross who each had 16 points. Hamilton also had a team-high seven rebounds to go with two steals on the defensive end.
Marian remains on the road traveling to Rockford for a 7 p.m. tip-off Wednesday, Dec. 4.
