LOCKPORT, Ill. – Marian University women’s bowling defeated three nationally-ranked teams as part of a ninth-place finish at the Flyer Classic.

  • Marian had a perfect opening day going 5-0 in Baker play finishing with 4,692 pins.
  • It was the fifth-highest total in the field after the opening day of competition.
  • The Sabres most notably defeated Newman University 987-963 where the Jets are ranked third in the DII/III poll and 16th in the nation.
  • Marian also earned an 890-820 victory over CCIW foe Carthage who is also receiving votes in the DII/III poll.
  • The stiff competition continued into day two where Marian would go 3-2.
  • Marian opened the traditional format with a 1,000 for its highest match of the tournament.
  • The Sabres would total 4,503 pins to finish with a 183.9 average.
  • Marian fell to No. 11 Sam Houston State by just 34 pins before back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked opponents.
  • The Sabres first defeated the top ranked team in the DII/III poll, 10th in the nation, Maryville.
  • Marian followed that up with a victory over No. 5 in the DII/III poll McKendree, 23rd nationally.
  • This earned the Sabres the No. 10 seed for bracket play where Marian fell in a close 4-2 match to Alabama-Birmingham to open.
  • Marian was able to bounce back, however, defeating Valparaiso in seven games posting a 238 in the final game of the match.
  • The Sabres then closed out the event defeating Alabama-Birmingham in seven games in a rematch of the bracket play opener where the Sabres ended the match with a 212.
