DAVENPORT, Fla. – Marian University baseball (4-3, 0-0 NACC) defeated Gwynedd Mercy 6-4 before falling to the Griffins 8-6 in a non-conference doubleheader.

GAME 1

  • The Sabres were able to consistently score runs to take the opener.
  • Graduate student Jonah Landowski hit his third homer to open the game in the first inning.
  • Landowski then doubled in a run to put Marian ahead 2-0 in the third.
  • The Griffins responded in their half of the third tying the game at 2-2.
  • The two squads traded runs again in the fourth with Gwynedd Mercy taking its first lead at 4-3.
  • An error in the fifth allowed two Sabres to score as Marian took the lead for good.
  • Marian was able to pad the lead on a balk in the sixth inning.
  • The Griffins were able to put the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh but Isaiah Grimm would lock down the first save of his career.

GAME 2

  • Two big innings for Gwynedd Mercy allowed the Griffins to salvage a split.
  • Marian once again had a fast start with sophomore Gus Walker driving in a run via a bases loaded hit by pitch in the first.
  • The Griffins then scored three in the third and three in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
  • The Sabres responded in the fourth with three runs of their own.
  • Marian had a pair of sacrifice flies and Landowski drove in another run to put Marian behind just 6-4.
  • Another sacrifice fly from junior Albert Kiszka in the fifth put Marian behind by just one at 6-5.
  • The Griffins were able to pad its lead and with a run in the sixth and seventh and led 8-5 going into the bottom of the seventh.
  • Back-to-back doubles opened the seventh with junior Riley Palmquist driving in a run.
  • The Sabres were able to get the tying run on base but couldn’t plate anymore falling 8-6.
