KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Marian University softball (5-7, 0-0 NACC) split with Wheaton to close out its spring trip.

GAME 1

  • Marian went to extra innings for the first time this season but fell to the Thunder 7-6 in nine innings to open the twin bill.
  • The Sabres led 1-0 after five innings before both offenses dominated.
  • Wheaton scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead.
  • Freshman Ariana Schliepp then homered in the sixth, her second of the season, to put Marian behind 4-2.
  • The Thunder padded its lead to 6-2 in the seventh before a big Marian rally in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Senior Julia Corona drove in a pair of runs to open the inning before sophomore Kerena Wood drove in a run with a single.
  • Freshman Morgan Jarvi then drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game.
  • Neither team scored in the eighth and the Thunder would win the game with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

GAME 2

  • The Sabre offense took over early in game two to salvage a split with an 8-4 win.
  • Marian scored all of its runs in the first four innings with four runs coming in the fourth.
  • Junior Katelyn Matenaer opened the scoring for the game with a double and sparked the big fourth inning with a two-run homer, her fifth of the season.
  • The Thunder scored three in the fourth and one in the sixth but the Sabres were able to hold on.
