RHINELANDER, Wis. – Marian University softball (2-0, 0-0 NACC) defeated Northland 6-2 and UW-Stevens Point 10-5 to open the season.
GAME 1
- The Sabres got out to a fast start with junior Katelyn Matenaer hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
- Marian scored three runs in the third inning to pull ahead 5-0.
- Senior Emalee Depa closed out the scoring for Marian driving in a run with a double in the fifth.
- The LumberJills scored two runs in the top of the seventh but Marian was able to hold off the rally.
GAME 2
- Another fast start saw Marian score six runs in the first two innings against UW-Stevens Point.
- Matenaer drove in four of the six runs with her second home run of the day in the first and a double in the second.
- The Pointers cut their deficit down to 7-5 with Matenaer hitting another home run in the fourth inning.
- A three-run homer from Depa in the sixth inning created some breathing room and put the final at 10-5.
GAME 1
- Each team recorded eight hits with Northland committing the lone error of the game.
GAME 2
- Marian had five extra-base hits with three home runs and two doubles.
- The Sabres held an 11-10 advantage in hits with UWSP committing two errors and Marian just one.
