Marian University NCAA men’s hockey (11-12-2, 5-6-5-2 NCHA) fell in overtime to Lake Forest 4-3 to secure the No. 6 seed for the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs.

  • It was a special teams filled game for the Sabres with Marian scoring three special-team goals.
  • Sophomore Daunte Fortner opened the scoring at the 14:52 mark with a power-play score for his ninth goal. Senior Blake Kleiner and junior Mason Richey each earned an assist.
  • Richey then netted a short-handed goal on a breakaway with an assist from junior Alex Rondeau with 2:56 left in the period.
  • Lake Forest cut their deficit down to one with just 1:25 left until the third period.
  • The Foresters then evened the score at 2-2 4:40 into the final period.
  • Sophomore Jordan Simoneau lit the lamp on the power play for his ninth goal of the season just 3:31 to put Marian ahead once again. Freshman Noah Pickart and sophomore Jaymes Knee each earned assists.
  • Lake Forest once again had an answer scoring with just 6:12 remaining to send the game into overtime.
  • The Foresters secured the comeback win 2:59 into overtime to secure two points.
  • Marian outshot the Foresters in the first two periods but LFC held an 18-6 advantage between the final period and overtime. Lake Forest finished with a 35-28 edge.
  • Marian was 2-for-4 on the power play and the penalty kill held LFC scoreless on five chances.
  • Lake Forest won 41 of the 68 faceoffs in the game.
  • With the overtime loss combined with an Aurora win, Marian will travel to St. Norbert Feb. 17-18 for the opening round of the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs.
