Marian University field hockey (8-5, 4-3 SAA) closed out its home schedule with an upset of Rhodes 2-1 at Smith Field.

  • The Sabres were able to get out to a fast start scoring just 5:47 into the match off of a penalty corner. Sophomore Indi Rameckers was able to find the back of the net with an assist from fellow sophomore Jikke Biemans to put Marian ahead 1-0.
  • This score held into the second quarter before Rhodes found an equalizer just 2:18 into the second stanza.
  • The 1-1 stalemate held going into halftime.
  • Marian was able to once again get out to a strong start in the second half with sophomore Allyson Nichols burying a penalty stroke just 4:28 into the third quarter.
  • The Sabre defense then held Rhodes scoreless for the entire half en route to a 2-1 victory.
  • Marian held an 18-15 edge for shots in the game and had an 11-8 advantage for shots on goal.
  • Both squads created double-digit penalty corner chances with Rhodes holding a slim 13-12 lead in the category.
  • This is the first victory for the Sabres against Rhodes in four games.
  • With the win, Marian clinches at least the No. 3 seed for the SAA Tournament.
