A good death: case studies in end-of-life care (45:22)
At the Sacred Heart Palliative Care Centre in Sydney, Australia, a small group of health care professionals are devoting their careers to death. Sacred Heart’s patients have all been diagnosed with a terminal illness—but instead of pursuing elusive cures and treatments, they have embraced the finality of their lives with guidance that contradicts much of conventional medicine. In this film, four of those patients have made another courageous decision. They have allowed cameras to accompany them on their last journeys, which focus on spending time with loved ones and receiving palliative care that maximizes dignity and comfort. Conversations with patients, doctors, nurses, and scholars praise the Sacred Heart environment, which replaces stress and false hope with what might be called empowerment.

Death as life (1:09:39)
Death is a taboo subject. Most of us do not want to discuss it. We tiptoe around it, try to circumvent it, or use euphemisms. Our loved ones did not die; they “passed away.” Maybe we think we can avoid death, but no one can, and death is not limited to physical death. It comes in many forms. We can experience the death of a dream, the death of a relationship, the death of our youth, the death of our health, and any number of significant changes that forces us to grapple with impermanence. Directed by Sofia A. Wellman, this film suggests: if we do not face death, we fear it, and fear is an even heavier load to bear than death, because fear saps the energy out of life.

Let me Die (1:13:35)
Each person has an intimate relationship with life. Why isn’t it the same with death? Shouldn’t we be allowed a freely chosen, dignified end when the time is right? Let Me Die explores the answers to these questions and more as critically ill people courageously speak about their quality of life and their wish to die with dignity. This documentary provides interviews with doctors who advocate a more humane, less controlling approach to illness and death. In French with English subtitles.

Bereavement issues in palliative care: effective palliative care (21:41)
This video discusses the stages and ramifications of grief, mourning, and bereavement and the effects of professional interventions. Aspects of grief and loss discussed include physical and mental deterioration, spiritual crisis, altered goals and relationships, reactions to suffering, and the healing process. Communication strategies, appropriate closure, child and teenage concepts of death, and personal issues of mortality are examined. A part of the series Effective Palliative Care.
