Marian University athletics has announced that long-time assistant coach has been promoted to be an associate head coach for the Marian University men’s basketball program, effective immediately.
“Marcus has been an instrumental part of not only the men’s basketball program but the entire university,” commented director of athletics Jason Bartelt. “I am honored he has accepted this promotion and look forward to working with him to accomplish our department goals.”
Wiegert will enter his ninth season on the Marian men’s basketball coaching staff and has also led the Marian women’s tennis program for the past four seasons. As an assistant coach for men’s basketball, Wiegert was responsible for many of the day-to-day tasks within the program as well as having a heavy hand on the recruiting trail. In 2013-14, Marian won the NACC regular season and tournament championship with a 22-7 overall record and 17-3 league mark. The Sabres qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001 and came one point away from knocking off the No. 1 team in the country, UW-Stevens Point, on the road in the first round. Prior to his return to Marian, Wiegert spent time at Carroll and UW-Superior as an assistant coach.
A native of Deerbrook, Wisconsin, Wiegert was a 2008 graduate of Marian University with a degree in sport and recreation management and a minor in information technology. In August 2016, Wiegert earned his master’s degree in sports management from Lasell College.
