ASHLAND, Wis. – No. 14/15 Marian University men’s hockey (18-6-1, 12-6-0 NCHA) shutout Northland by a 3-0 final to close out the regular season.
Sophomore Hunter Vorva stopped all 27 shots, including 12 shots in the third period, he faced to lead the Sabres as he earned his fifth shutout on the season.
It wasn’t until the second period, however, that the Sabres were able to find the back of the net. Senior Hunter Stewart was able to light the lamp 6:19 into the second period, assists to senior Derek Thorogood and junior Nick Monfils, for his 12th goal of the year.
Marian was then able to put the game away in the third period with a pair of goals. Junior James Mathias scored the first goal of the period, assists to junior Lane Valimont and senior Cole McCaig, at the 2:27 mark before sophomore Mitchell Baumann scored his fourth goal of the year at the 17:38 mark with assists to senior Braden Crone and sophomore Chris Deprez.
Marian outshot the LumberJacks 34-27 for the game and held Northland to only four shots in the opening period. Monfils led the offense with seven shots on frame.
In the faceoff circle, Thorogood led the Sabres going 11-5, while McCaig finished 7-5.
Marian will now take on St. Scholastica in the opening round of the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs with times and dates to be announced.
