Trio from Marian men’s volleyball named All-NACC

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Marian men’s volleyball has had three student-athletes named all-conference announced the league office.

Senior Aaron Wendels (Fond du Lac, Wis.) had a strong finish to his final campaign as a Sabre and was named first team All-NACC.  The Fond du Lac, Wis. native recorded 324 kills on the season and was one of only two attackers in the NACC to record more than 3.0 kills per set with 3.45 kills per set, 21st in the nation.  Wendels also ranked second in the conference, 25th in the country, with 3.86 points per set.  The right-hander recorded double-digit kills in 19 matches including six of the final seven matches, while also ranking third on the team with 168 digs and second on the squad with 26 service aces.  Wendels was also named the NACC Player of the Week after leading the Sabres with a 20-kill performance in an upset of then-ranked No. 7 Dominican.

Junior Jon Smallpage (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) had yet another strong season leading the Sabre offense for most of the season and earning a spot on the All-NACC first team.  Smallpage also finished with 324 kills on the season with a 3.45 kills per set to rank 21st in the nation.  The Whitefish Bay, Wis. native was also 13th in the nation, NACC leader, with 4.22 points per set during the season.  Smallpage led the Sabres with 31 service aces and 65 total blocks, 18 of which were solo blocks.  The right-handed swinger had three double-doubles on the season and ranked 10th in the NACC with a .235 hitting percentage.

Junior Cullen Liberski (Germantown, Wis.) was dominant in the back row for Marian and earned a spot on the second team all-conference list.  After being named the Defensive Player of the Year in the MCVL a season ago, Liberski finished fifth in the nation, second in the NACC with 3.28 digs per set, just 0.07 digs per set behind the conference leader.  The Sabre libero totaled 308 digs on the season with 15 or more digs in seven matches this season.  He finished with fewer than double-digit digs in only eight matches, one of which he was the primary setter recording 20 assists.

Marian travels to No. 8 Dominican for a 7 p.m. match Thursday, April 12 in the NACC Tournament semifinals.
