Thorogood nets pair of weekly honors

Hockey player Thorogood received two honorsMarian University men’s hockey senior forward Derek Thorogood has been named to the Team of the Week and repeated as the NCHA Offensive Player of the Week.

Thorogood (Calgary, Alta.) earns a spot on the Team of the Week for the first time this season, while also being the first student-athlete to repeat as NCHA Offensive Player of the Week after playing a role in all five Sabre goals during a 3-3 tie against Saint John’s (Minn.) and 2-0 win over Bethel.  In the opener against the Johnnies, he scored the opening goal and the game-tying goal in the third period, adding the assist on the second MU goal of the 3-3 draw. Then against Bethel, he scored on the power play to open the scoring, which proved to be the game-winner, and later assisted the second Marian goal. In all, he tallied 3 goals and 2 assists.  Thorogood ranks second in the NCHA with seven goals so far this season and has a team-best 12 points.

Marian remains at home to take on Finlandia Friday, Dec. 1 before hosting No. 1 St. Norbert Saturday, Dec. 2.  Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Blue Line Family Ice Center.
