No. 7/11 Marian University men’s hockey (4-1-0, 4-0-0 NCHA) was tied with No. 1 UW-Stevens Point after two periods before the Pointers pulled away for a 5-2 win in the third period.
The Pointers took control in the first period scoring the first two goals of the game while holding a 9-6 advantage in shots. Marian rebounded in a big way in the second period as the Sabres were able to send 14 shots on goal. Senior Nick Monfils opened the scoring for the Sabres just 1:34 into the period for his second goal of the year. Freshman Parker Colley would assist the goal for his second of the season.
Later in the period with the Sabres on the penalty kill, senior Jake Howie made the most of a breakaway opportunity netting his second goal of the season. The goal came at the 10:39 mark and closed out a period where the Marian penalty kill held UWSP scoreless on three power plays.
The two teams went toe-to-toe for the first half of the third period but late goals from the Pointers allowed UWSP to pull away. The game-winner would come at the 13:23 mark before two shorthanded goals, the second of which came with a Marian empty net.
The Sabres were narrowly edged in shots with the final tally being 30-29. Monfils paced the way for the Sabres with six shots, while fellow seniors Lane Valimont and James Mathias each recorded four shots. Junior Hunter Vorva (4-1-0) finished with 25 saves in the defeat and stopped all 10 shots he faced in the second period.
Marian closes out the weekend hosting UW-Stout at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 17, from Blue Line.
