Mary Steberg has become the first Marian University student to receive the Wisconsin Nursing Home Social Workers Association Inc.’s $1,000 Sister Veronica Carroll Memorial Scholarship.

To be recognized for the accomplishment, the junior Social Work major has been invited to attend Wisconsin Nursing Home Social Workers Association, Inc. Fall Conference in Pewaukee Oct. 10-11.

“I was so excited to learn I had been selected—it’s a tremendous honor and I couldn’t be happier,” Steberg said. “Attending the conference will give me an opportunity to thank everyone and I hope to meet lifelong friends and mentors there.”

Steberg returned to Marian after a 27-year career in corrections and law enforcement and retiring from her position as Huber Supervisor at the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office – Jail Division. She benefitted from receiving Marian’s Transfer of Excellence Scholarship, as well as a Legacy Scholarship resulting from her daughter, Anna, being a 2018 graduate of the Marian Social Work program.

Steberg, who currently volunteers at Agnesian HealthCare’s Hospice Home of Hope, has always wanted to be a social worker and would like to eventually work at a nursing home/hospice.
