Slow start costly for Sabre women’s basketball versus Aurora

Marian University women’s basketball (3-16, 1-13 NACC) fell to Aurora at home by a final of 71-51 in NACC action.

Marian would score 32 points in the second half and outscored the Spartans 17-15 but a slow start allowed the Spartans to knock off the Sabres.  Aurora shot 15-29 (.517) in the opening half as they were able to take a 37-19 lead into the break.

Six different Sabres scored in the fourth quarter as Marian went 6-15 (.400) from the field including 4-7 (.571) from beyond the arc in the final quarter.

Despite the loss, Marian forced 23 Spartan turnovers, which translated into 15 points for the Sabres.  Marian also had their most efficient game of the year from beyond the arc going 4-9 (.444).  The Sabre bench also outscored the Spartan bench by a 14-11 margin.

Junior Rachel Serchen scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Sabres, while senior Brandi Bender scored 10 points with eight rebounds and two steals.

Marian opens a three-game road trip traveling to Concordia Wis. Tuesday, Jan. 30 for a 7 p.m. tip.
