February 26, 2021

Marian University men’s hockey (5-5-0, 3-1-0 NCHA) salvaged a split in the season series with Trine defeating the Thunder 2-1 in overtime.

The game was a defensive battle for the first 40 minutes with neither team finding the back of the net.  Trine would outshoot Marian 15-8 in the opening period with the Sabres dominating the second period with a 13-3 edge in shots.

The Sabres didn’t need long to break the scoreless tie scoring 1:43 into the final period.  Sophomore Tie Enns was able to tip in a shot from sophomore Brady Pupp for his seventh goal of the season with freshman Mateo Albinati also assisting the goal.  Trine would then net the equalizer with just 29 seconds remaining with an extra-attacker goal.

Each team had their opportunities in overtime but sophomore Jack Sampson was able to secure the Marian win with his third goal of the season, assists to juniors Blaine Caton and Troy Ring.

Marian finished with a 37-34 advantage for the game in shots.  Sophomore Colby Muise (4-2-0) put together one of his strongest performances of the season making 33 saves on the night.

Marian returns to NCHA action traveling to St. Scholastica Friday, Feb. 26 for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
