AURORA / FOREST PARK, Ill. – Marian University women’s tennis (2-2, 2-1 NACC) defeated Aurora 7-2 before sweeping Dominican 9-0 in the first NACC twin bill of the season.
In the opening match of the day, the Sabres took all three doubles positions to start fast. Junior Meg Hartzell and sophomore Mackenzie Meyers teamed up to take No. 1 doubles 8-4, freshmen Krysten Bruce and Emma Lewandowski took No. 2 doubles 8-1 and freshman Brenda Ordonez partnered with junior Alyssa Ostrowski to take No. 3 doubles 8-1.
Marian would drop the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions but the Sabres dominated the No. 3 to No. 6 positions. Junior Andrea Krahenbuhl completed a perfect sweep at No. 6, while Bruce and Lewandowski only dropped one set apiece at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Junior Kristin Houle capped off the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.
After a short bus trip to Dominican, the Sabres once again took all three doubles positions to open the match. Hartzell and Meyers once again teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot winning 8-2, while No. 2 and No. 3 doubles saw different duos than the morning match. Ordonez and Bruce teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Ostrowski and freshman Erica Counter had a clean 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles.
Hartzell bounced back from dropping the first set at No. 1 singles to win the second set 6-0 and then the tiebreak 10-8 to open singles play. Meyers also bounced back after a morning loss to win No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-1. Bruce once again had a strong showing at No. 3 singles with a perfect sweep, while Lewandowski, similarly to Hartzell, bounced back after an opening set loss to force a tiebreak that she eventually won 10-4. Krahenbuhl moved up to No. 5 singles and completed her third win with sophomore Mati Kissack completing the MU sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Marian closes out their five-match road trip traveling to Beloit for a 4 p.m. start Monday, Sept. 11.
