SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Marian University women’s volleyball (0-4, 0-4 NACC) took a set in each match but were defeated by Lakeland in both matches of a NACC doubleheader.
The Muskies would take the first two sets of the day with the second set needing extras as Marian would fall 26-24. Lakeland was able to jump out to a 7-3 lead to open the third set, but Marian was able to rally and take a 14-13 lead. The two squads then traded leads eventually to a 21-21 stalemate. Marian was then able to force a fourth set scoring four of the next five points. Lakeland was once again able to take an early lead in the fourth set, but Marian rallied to only trail at 21-20. This time, however, Marian wouldn’t be able to rally and fell 25-22.
Sophomore Monica Dreifuerst continued her dominance posting a match-high 13 kills to go with 22 digs. Fellow sophomore Caelan Tourdot also had 11 kills, while junior Brooklyn Taylor led the back row with 23 digs and two service aces. Freshman Anna Tapia assisted on 33 of the 40 Sabre kills.
Marian had a slow start to open the second match as the Muskies were able to easily take the first set. The Sabres bounced back, though, recording 15 kills with only one error in the second set for a .326 hitting percentage. Marian was able to close out the second set with eight unanswered points where Dreifuerst had five kills in the spurt. Lakeland was able to bounce back and take the next two sets and secure the NACC sweep.
Dreifuerst added another 13 kills to go with 11 digs as she now has four double-doubles in four matches. Freshman Reagan Jasica paced the back row with 15 digs, and Tapia added another 35 assists.
Marian will next travel to MSOE Sunday, March 28 for a noon twin bill.
