Sabre women’s volleyball suffers sweep against Edgewood to open season

March 15, 2021

Marian University women’s volleyball (0-2, 0-2 NACC) fell to Edgewood in a five-set match and a four-set match to open the season.

The Eagles were able to take the first two sets of the day 25-22 and 25-14 but the Sabres wouldn’t go away quietly forcing the opening match of the day to go five sets.  An 11-4 run in the middle of the third set helped give the Sabres a spark to begin their comeback effort.  In the fourth set, Marian trailed 23-20 but were able to score five consecutive points to force a fourth set.  The Eagles jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the set but Marian once again rallied bringing their deficit down to 12-10.  Edgewood would score three straight points, however, to take the first match.

Sophomore Monica Dreifuerst had a big match to open the day posting a match-high 20 kills with 14 digs.  From the back row, junior Brooklyn Taylor had a team-best 21 digs.

Marian had a strong start to the second match taking the opening set 25-23, but Edgewood would answer taking the final three sets.  The Sabres led 22-16 in that opening set only to have Edgewood score seven unanswered points.  Marian was able to bounce back, however, scoring three straight points to take the set.

Dreifuerst posted a second double-double recording 13 kills with 14 digs in match two.  Freshman Reagan Jasica also had 13 digs in the back row, while fellow freshman Katilyn Merrill had nine kills with a .316 hitting percentage.

Marian travels to Lakeland Sunday, March 21 for a noon doubleheader in NACC action.
