Marian University women’s volleyball (2-6, 0-0 NACC) fell to Beloit in their home opener with set scores of 20-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-17, and 15-10.
The Sabres jumped out early hitting .206 with 13 kills in the opening set to take an early lead. Marian would use a 12-5 run after a 7-7 start to pull ahead and scored the final four points of the set to take the opener. The Marian offense went on to record 17 kills in the second set, but the Buccanneers went on a 7-2 streak fighting off four Marian set-point opportunities to even the sets.
After Beloit opened the third with a 12-11 advantage, the Sabres scored nine of the next 14 points to take a five-point lead late, which proved to be the difference. Needing a fourth set win to stay alive, the Beloit defense held Marian to an even hitting percentage. The Buccaneers led 17-15 late and closed out the set with an 8-2 run to force a fifth.
Marian took the early lead in the fifth at 6-5 only to have Beloit go on a 5-1 run. The Sabres managed to cut their deficit down to two at 11-9 but Beloit went on to score four of the next five points and complete the comeback.
Freshman Monica Dreifuerst had another strong game with a match-high 23 kills to go with 14 digs. Senior Amber Yahr also produced a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs. Senior Sara Komosa and sophomore Hanah Walther each had strong offensive nights as well with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. From the back row, freshman Andrea Miller recorded a match-high 23 digs.
Marian hits the road for the Red Hawks Invitational playing host Ripon and Saint Mary’s (Minn.) Friday, Sept. 13.
