Marian University women’s tennis (3-1, 0-0 NACC) swept away the opening day of NACC play defeating Dominican and Concordia Chicago by a 9-0 score.
The Sabres opened the day with a pair of convincing doubles sweeps against Dominican with senior Meg Hartzell and sophomore Brenda Ordonez taking the No. 2 flight and senior Celeste Degeneffe teaming up with sophomore Erica Counter to take the third flight. Junior Mackenzie Meyers and sophomore Emma Lewandowski rallied after trailing 6-3 to win the next five sets and take the No. 1 flight 8-6.
Marian then closed out the sweep of Dominican behind 6-0, 6-0 wins from sophomore Kyrsten Bruce at No. 2 singles, Degeneffe at No. 5, and senior Kristin Houle at the sixth flight. Hartzell, Lewandowski, and Meyers would take the No. 1, 2, and 4 flights, respectively, in straight sets.
The second match of the day saw Marian handily take down Concordia Chicago only dropping a total of four sets in singles action. At doubles, Lewandowski and Meyers earned the No. 1 flight victory 8-2 and Hartzell teamed up with Ordonez to a sweeping 8-0 win.
Bruce led the way in singles winning her third-flight match without dropping a set once again. Hartzell at No. 1, Lewandowski at No. 2, Meyers at No. 4, and Degeneffe at No. 5 won their singles matches in straight sets with each only dropping one set.
“We played well today and were able to get out to early leads,” commented head coach Brian Ottman. “We were able to keep our composure and played smart tennis all day long.”
Marian closes out the weekend at Division II opponent Purdue Northwest at noon tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 9.
