STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Marian University women’s soccer (2-3-0, 0-0-0 NACC) closed out a tough weekend falling to UW-Stevens Point in a 2-1 double overtime thriller.
The Pointers struck first in this non-conference match-up but freshman Olivia Meerdink continued her strong start to her Sabre career scoring just 43-seconds later to even the score. The goal was her fourth of the season and she went to the upper right corner after receiving a pass from senior Alexis Peterson, who earned an assist on the play.
From there, though, neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Pointers held a heavy advantage in shots after the end of regulation but the extra periods of soccer were much closer as the Sabres were able to match the Pointers.
After just 2:07 into the opening overtime, Meerdink nearly netted her second goal of the game but saw her shot narrowly miss by hitting the post. It wouldn’t be until the 102nd minute that UWSP would net the golden goal and earn the win.
Senior Danielle Deltgen (2-2-0) had arguably her best performance so far of the season despite taking the loss in goal making 11 saves. Marian finished the match with 11 shots led by Meerdink who sent five shots, four of which were on goal. Sophomore Alicia Balken added three shots with two of those finding the keeper.
Marian is next in action when the Sabres host Maranatha Baptist Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. from Smith Field.
