Sabre women’s lacrosse drops overtime thriller to Clarke 18-17

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Marian University women’s lacrosse (3-13, 2-10 MWLC) trailed by as much as five goals before forcing overtime where the Sabres fell 18-17.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team managing a lead larger than three goals.  The Pride held that three-goal lead with 7:00 left in the half before Marian was able to score three of the final four goals of the half to cut their deficit down to 9-8 at the break.

The Pride were able to score seven of the first 10 goals in the second half to lead 16-11 with 14:13 left to play.  Marian then began their rally scoring the next five goals to tie the game at 16-16 with 4:22 left to play.  Clarke would retake the lead before senior Hailey Miller was able to force overtime with an equalizer that came with only 10 seconds left to play.

In the extra period, the Pride would score a goal on their first shot to claim the non-conference victory just 20 seconds in.

Miller paced the Sabre offense with seven goals, while freshman Sally Moris added five goals and two assists for a seven-point game.  Sophomore Lindsay Lewison and junior Breena Gaskov each added multi-goal games.

In goal, junior Molly Gross suffered the loss despite making 14 saves on the 32 shots she faced.

Marian plays their final home game of the season taking on Hamline Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. from Smith Field.
