Marian University women’s hockey (3-10-1, 2-4-1 NCHA) opened a conference series against Trine falling 4-1.
The first saw both offenses start out fast with a total of 31 shots fired on goal in the period. Trine would find the only goal in the period scoring at the 8:38 mark. Then just 2:58 into the second period the Thunder were able to build their lead out to 2-0.
Senior Morgan Bolin put Mairan on the board when she caused a turnover deep in the Thunder defensive zone and lit the lamp for the sixth time this season. Trine was able to find an equalizer, however, taking a 3-1 advantage headed to the final period.
Both defenses were able to find their stride in the final period with a Trine empty-net goal serving as the only score in the period.
Senior Maggie Cusey (2-4-1) made 43 stops in net with 20 of her saves coming in the opening period.
Marian concludes their series with Trine tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18, for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
