Sabre women’s basketball narrowly falls to Lakeland 56-53

Marian University women’s basketball (2-5, 2-2 NACC) suffered their first home loss falling to Lakeland by a 56-53 final.

Marian opened the game strong taking a 15-12 lead after the first quarter.  The Lakeland defense buckled down on the Sabres in the second quarter, however, holding Marian to only two field goals.  The Muskies ultimately outscored Marian 18-7 in the second stanza taking a 30-22 lead into halftime.

Lakeland was able to build their lead out to double-digits in the third quarter with just 41 seconds remaining only to have a quick six points from Marian put the score at 42-37 heading into the final quarter.  The Muskies continued to hold their advantage leading by seven with just 51 seconds remaining.  An and-one from sophomore Paris Harris and layup from Morgan Johnson kept MU alive and put the Sabres down by just two with 13 seconds left at 55-53.  The Muskies were able to convert on one free throw with nine seconds remaining before a last-second three-pointer from Marian missed long to put the final at 56-53.

The Sabres outshot the Muskies in the defeat shooting 19-56 (.339) from the field and also finished with more rebounds by a 47-41 margin.  Johnson led Marian with 15 points, while Harris had 14 points to go with eight rebounds.  Freshman Madison Holdiman also had eight rebounds.

Marian travels to Alverno Saturday, Dec. 14 for a 7 p.m. tip in NACC action.
