Marian University women’s basketball (2-5, 2-5 NACC) trailed by just four heading into the final quarter but couldn’t rally falling to CUW 73-52.
The first quarter saw both offenses thrive, but it was a close stanza as neither team managed a lead larger than five points. The Sabres would lead by three in the final seconds only to have a layup with three seconds left cut into that advantage and put Marian ahead 20-19. The seesaw battle between the two squads continued in the second quarter with no team leading by more than three points up to a 28-28 tie with 2:45 left until half. The Falcons then put together a strong run to head into the break scoring seven unanswered to go up 35-28.
Marian finished the half shooting 12-25 (.480) from the field and outrebounded the Falcons 18-11 thanks to seven offensive boards.
After the Falcons led 39-31 with 7:11 left in the third quarter, Marian took a timeout which sparked a 10-2 run that knotted the game at 41-41 with 3:12 left. Another late run from CUW, however, gave the Falcons a 53-49 advantage heading into the final quarter. Marian would score on their first possession of the fourth quarter to cut their deficit down to two but then CUW took over and scored 12 unanswered to go up 65-51 with 4:15 left to play. From there the Falcons were able to cruise to the final at 73-52.
Junior Paris Harris once again paced the Sabres with another strong outing that saw her score a game-high 17 points with six rebounds. Sophomore Claire Levendoski also chipped in 14 points hitting four three-pointers to go with a pair of assists and steals.
Marian closes out the final series of the season hosting CUW tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 13, for a 5 p.m. tip.
