Marian University women’s volleyball (10-15, 3-8 NACC) needed five sets but were able to defeat Carroll with set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 28-30, 22-25 and 15-11 to end the 2017 season.
Marian was able to hold Carroll to a -.087 hitting percentage in the opening set as MU cruised to a set win. Marian opened the match with a 9-3 run and then closed out the opening set scoring the final four points.
The Sabres jumped all over the Pioneers in the second set but it was the offense that took over hitting .333 for the set with 13 kills. After MU led 12-10 early, the Sabres used a 9-2 run to build a convincing lead and cruise to the 2-0 lead. Freshman Jamie Schrauth led the Sabre offense in the set with five kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
The third set proved to be a thriller with each team going back-and-forth. Carroll led late 23-21 in the set before the Sabres went on a quick 4-1 run to take a 25-24 lead where the Sabres also fended off one set point. MU would fend off two more set points before having an opportunity at a match point but a service error from the Sabre kept the Pioneers alive. Carroll then managed to rattle off two more quick points to force a fourth set. Schrauth added six more kills in the set, while sophomore Amber Yahr led the back row with six digs in the set.
Carroll jumped out to an early lead in the fourth looking to force a fifth at 19-13 when the Sabres once again mounted a late rally. The Sabres would manage to cut the lead to as little as two at 24-22 but the rally was too late as a Pioneer kill forced the winner-take-all fifth set.
The Pioneers used their momentum from winning the third and fourth set to take an early 9-6 lead in the fifth but the Sabres once again would not go away quietly. The Sabres went on a 4-1 run to tie the set at 10-10 before closing out the match scoring five of the final six points. Freshman Cheyenne Henson capped off the five-set thriller with a service ace and had five kills with a .555 hitting percentage in the set. Sophomore Jenna Skroski had seven digs in the fifth to lead the Sabre back row.
Schrauth finished with a career-high 21 kills and a .378 hitting percentage to pace the offense, while Henson added 11 kills. Freshman Jenna Moehn also had a big night with eight kills and a .583 hitting percentage in the MU middle. From the back row, Skroski led the Sabres with 17 digs.
Senior Amber Baker closed out her career with a double-double recording 43 assists and 15 digs. Baker finishes her career ranked second in program history with 2,799 assists, fifth with 111 service aces and ninth with 1,069 digs.
