MARQUETTE, Mich. – Marian University softball (1-3, 0-0 NACC) could only manage eight hits at day two of the Finlandia Dome Classic falling to UW-Oshkosh 9-1 in six innings and St. Scholastica 6-1.
In the opener of the day, UW-Oshkosh scored the first six runs of the game before the Sabres were able to plate their only run in the top of the fifth. Freshman Peyton Loesch opened the inning with a single as part of a 2-2 game, the only Sabre with multiple hits in the loss. After a fielder’s choice and a ground rule double from sophomore Courtney Makinen, freshman Katy Croeker was able to drive in junior Olivia Hartley with a single.
The Titans would plate three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to close out the win.
Freshman Myranda Schuttenhelm (0-1) started her first career game throwing the first 3.0 innings with a pair of punch outs, while Loesch appeared in relief.
Marian started fast against St. Scholastica using a two-out rally to take an early lead in the top half of the first. Sophomore Gianna Esposito started the rally after a single followed by a stolen base and was driven a batter later by freshman Lindsey Vela.
The remainder of the game, however, saw the Sabres go hitless. Marian wouldn’t surrender the lead until the bottom of the fifth when the Saints struck for four runs. St. Scholastica then added to their lead in the sixth with a pair of runs.
Loesch was the lone Sabre who reached base multiple times with a single and a walk. Sophomore Paige Rauhut (1-1) battled through 5.2 innings scattering 10 hits with nine punch outs. Loesch relieved Rauhut striking out the only batter she faced.
Marian will next take on Finlandia at 10:30 a.m. (CST) and Smith at 6 p.m. (CST) Saturday, March 10 from Leesburg, Fla. to open the PFX Spring Games.
