March 22, 2019

CLERMONT, Fla. – Marian University softball (8-6, 0-0 NACC) defeated Grinnell 10-1 in five innings before falling to Tufts 13-2 to close out their spring trip.

The Marian offense started off the day strong as the Sabres were able to run-rule Grinnell.  Marian plated five runs in the first two innings with errors bringing in juniors Ally Fox and Gianna Esposito in the first inning.  Fox and senior Lindsey Strainis then drove in runs in the second inning before a double steal from the duo allowed Fox to score.

The Sabres added to their lead in the fourth with an RBI groundout from sophomore Peyton Loesch and a triple that plated Strainis from junior Taylor Lauscher.  Marian secured the mercy rule in the fifth inning with Strainis and freshman Melanie Weigel driving in runs.

Fox and Strainis each had multi-hit games in the victory with Fox scoring three times and Strainis driving in a pair.  Junior Paige Rauhut had a strong performance in the circle tossing all 5.0 innings only allowing four hits and one run with a pair of punch outs.

Tufts struck first in the second game of the day with a run in the first inning but Marian would take the lead with a pair of runs in the third.  A wild pitch plated Strainis to open the scoring for the Sabres before an RBI ground out from Lauscher brought in freshman Hannah Cozzi.

The Jumbos were able to tie the game in the fourth inning at 2-2 and then broke the game open with a seven-run inning in the fifth.  All of the scoring for the Tufts in the fifth inning came with two outs.  Tufts then added four runs in the seventh to close out the 13-2 final.

Six different Sabres recorded hits with Strainis, Lauscher, sophomore Katy Croeker, and freshman Kira Hall-Risor all reaching base multiple times.

Marian is next scheduled to host Dominican in their NACC and home opener Saturday, March 30 for a noon doubleheader.
