Sabre men’s volleyball swept by MSOE to close out the weekend
March 5, 2018
The offense couldn’t find a rhythm as Marian University men’s volleyball (7-12, 2-6 NACC) fell to MSOE with set scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 27-25.
The Sabres hung tight with the Raiders to open the match leading 15-12 to open the first set before a Raider timeout shifted the momentum. From there, MSOE went on an 8-1 run to take a 20-16 lead and take the opening set. The Raiders then jumped out early on the Sabres in the second set taking an 11-4 lead as they cruised to a 2-0 lead hitting .441 for the set.
In the third, Marian put up a good fight in a see-saw set where the largest lead was four points. The Sabres had a pair of opportunities to clinch the set and force a fourth set but were turned away on both opportunities before the Raiders closed out the sweep.
Junior Jon Smallpage led the Sabres with a match-high 12 kills, while sophomore Jacob DeGroot hit .375 and chipped in seven kills. From the back row, junior Thomas Jones had a team-high 10 digs in just two sets of action.
Marian returns to action Wednesday, March 7 traveling to Illinois Tech for a non-conference match-up with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
