Sabre men’s volleyball suffers sweep against Fontbonne

February 4, 2019

Marian University men’s volleyball (0-6, 0-0 NACC) was swept by Fontbonne with set scores of 26-24, 25-18, and 25-22.

The first set was tight throughout with neither team managing a lead larger than four points.  Marian would erase that four-point deficit with a 10-5 late in the set giving the Sabres a set point opportunity at 24-23.  The Griffins held off the set point and rattled off three consecutive points to win the opener.

Marian led for much of the second set but an 8-2 Fontbonne run in the middle of the set gave the Griffins a 20-16 advantage and cruised to a set win.  Fontbonne took an early 10-6 lead to open the third set and Marian was unable to cut into that deficit.  Marian would hold off match point three times before the Griffins secured the sweep.

The Griffin offense managed a hitting percentage above .320 in the second and third set.

Senior Jon Smallpage led Marian with a match-high 18 kills off of a .243 hitting percentage.  Smallpage also had five service aces to go with three block assists.  At the net, sophomore Robert Walusay and junior Jacob DeGroot also had three block assists in the defeat.

Marian opens NACC play hosting Concordia Chicago Friday, February 8 with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m. from Sadoff Gym.
