AURORA, Ill. – Marian University men’s volleyball (8-5, 7-4 NACC) suffered their second straight loss to Aurora falling to the Spartans 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, and 25-16 to be eliminated from the NACC tournament.
The Marian offense had a tough start as the Sabres would be held to only seven kills in the opening set. The Spartans took an early 9-6 lead and then scored five unanswered points to jump ahead 14-6 and never looked back. Marian was able to bounce back in the second set hitting .300 with 11 kills to only two errors. The Sabres never trailed after each team reached double-digit points in the set and used a 4-2 run at the end to even the sets.
Similarly to the opening set, Marian only trailed 13-10 to open before the Spartans used a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 18-11 and cruise to take the set. A 7-0 run in the fourth set then proved to be the dagger for the Sabre season as Aurora was able to defeat Marian.
The Marian offense was spread out with five student-athletes recording five or more kills led by senior Isaiahs Mena who had eight kills. Mena also paced the back row with 12 digs, while junior Carzell Combs added 11 digs.
