MADISON, Wis. – After falling in a winner-take-all game at the end of last season, Marian University men’s soccer (10-8-0, 5-5-0 NACC) redeemed themselves this year with a 2-1 win at Edgewood to earn the No. 6 seed in the NACC Tournament.
Edgewood controlled the pace of play in the opening half outshooting the Sabres 6-1 but the Eagles could only manage to put one of those shots on frame. After the scoreless opening half, Edgewood found the back of the net 6:30 into the second half.
Needing a rally, junior Eric Rodriguez deflected a shot in for his third goal of the year from senior Muhammed Abshir to tie the game in the 70th minute. Marian struck quickly once again as freshman Cade Klussendorf netted his fourth goal 1:42 later to give MU their first lead.
The Sabre defense was able to hold off the Eagles in the remaining minutes to clinch the win and send the Sabres to the NACC Tournament for the first time since 2010.
Edgewood finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots with Klusendorf and senior Jose Luis Alvarado being the lone Sabres to record multiple shots. Junior Ian Chacon (10-7-0) was lights out in goal for the Sabres stopping all five shots that he faced in his 84:42 of action.
Marian opens the NACC Tournament at Benedictine Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. The Sabres played at the Eagles just last weekend where Benedictine nearly defeated MU by a 1-0 final.
