Sabre men’s hockey upended by Aurora

January 22, 2018

Aurora scored two goals in all three periods as they defeated Marian University men’s hockey (11-6-1, 6-6-0 NCHA) by a 6-3 final.

The Spartans scored the first four goals of the game, two on the power play and one short handed before the Sabres answered with a pair of goals separated by 1:02 lat in the second period.

Senior Curtis Lewington tallied the first with assists to junior Nick Monfils and senior Hunter Stewart for his sixth goal of the year.  The Sabres then converted a power play of their own when sophomore Connor Blanck found the back of the net with assists to fellow sophomores Brock Weston and Clay Cross.

Aurora had an answer, however, with two goals to open the third period and extend their lead.  Blanck netted his second goal of the game, fifth of the season, when he converted on a turnover in the Aurora defensive end to close out the scoring.

Marian finished with a 41-21 advantage in shots including a 19-4 difference in the final period.  Senior Derek Thorogood had a game-high nine shots to lead the charge for Marian.

In the faceoff circle, the Sabres were dominant with a 61-24 record.  Junior Jake Howie went 26-9 to lead MU, while Lawson MacDonald was perfect on his 10 opportunities.

Marian remains home to host Northland Friday, Jan. 26 for a 7 p.m. puck drop in NCHA action.
