Marian University men’s hockey (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) opened their season with a convincing 9-2 win over Trine.
A five-goal third period from the Sabres highlighted the night with four of the nine MU goals coming on the power play. Senior Derek Thorogood had a big night for the Sabres with a hat trick and one assist. Thorogood had two of his goals come in the first period, including the first goal of the game that was assisted by freshman Dondre Watson, and his final to open the scoring for the third period. The forward also assisted senior Hunter Stewart‘s power play goal at the 17:21 mark of the third period.
Stewart also had a big offensive night adding two assists to go with his power play goal. Sophomore Chris Deprez lit the lamp for the first time in his career in the first period, while senior Curtis Lewington netted a power play goal to open the second period scoring. Senior Braden Crone, junior Gianni Mangone, and sophomore Connor Blanck also scored in the game with Mangone and Blanck scoring on the power play. Junior Nick Monfils and Blanck each had a pair of assists in the win.
The Sabre power play had a big game converting on four of their nine opportunities. Sophomore Hunter Vorva opened his career as a Sabre with a win making 16 saves on the 18 shots he faced as Marian outshot the Thunder 37-18.
Marian closes out the weekend hosting No. 1/2 Adrian at 4 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 4, from Blue Line Family Ice Center.
